Earth of Shine and Dark Mottling is an audiovisual work built around a new microtonal composition for 3 scordatura bass viols. Developed in collaboration with viol performer Liam Byrne and filmmaker/creative technologist Sophie Hedderwick, the project explores studio recording and 360° cinematography as tools for capturing embodied sound, gesture, and resonance.
The completed artwork will be presented in two interconnected formats: an immersive audio work (binaural and spatial mixes) and an interactive 3D film/VR experience. Both formats enable audiences to engage with the performance spatially – moving through sound and image using a browser, VR headset, or Dolby Atmos compatible headphones – so that sonic perspective and visual framing respond to the listener/viewer’s position. The project extends historical performance practice into contemporary digital frameworks, reframing listening as a spatial, embodied act rather than a fixed mode of auditory engagement.
